cs2023 - Computer Telephony and Voice over Internet CD

This CD contains a selection of software packages for people interested in computer telephony. There is greatest applicability to Linux/UNIX systems, next to Windows, and somewhat to Macintosh. Linux users who have not updated to recent kernel and sound device driver versions will find it worthwhile to do so, in order to most effectively use some of the programs. Source code is provided, and when practical, for Windows one or more executable. This is software that appears to be useful, but I cannot give assurances about the suitability of any package for a particular purpose.

I have included some documentation, where possible. In addition, packages contain documentation at varying levels of thoroughness, which you will see when you expand the archives in which they are stored. Note that there are various archive formats, which generally are appropriate to the area of applicability of the contents. Users are expected understand what compressed archive files are, and to be prepared to expand them, using programs such as tar or PKUNZIP or WinZip or similar utilities.

In addition, I have included a list of additional programs that may be of interest to some people, though they are not distributed on this CD.

Here is a listing of the packages included:

GnomeMeeting - An H.323 compatible videoconferencing, telephony, and VoIP softphone that allows audio and video calls to remote users with H.323 hardware or software (such as Microsoft Netmeeting). It supports registration in an ILS directory, gatekeeper, external MCU, Quicknet telephony cards, and PC-to-phone calls. Runs on Linux and Windows. Written by Damien Sandras
Speex - A patent-free compression method for speech. It is specialized for voice communications at low bit-rates in the 2-45 kbps range. Applicable to Voice over IP (VoIP), Internet audio streaming, audio archiving. Runs under MacOS X, Windows, and POSIX (UNIX) systems. By Jean-Marc Valin.
Kannel - A WAP gateway. It also works as an SMS gateway for GSM networks. Almost all GSM phones can use it to send and receive SMS messages, so this is a way to serve many more clients than just those using a WAP phone. Kannel was among the first WAP gateways to be certified as WAP 1.1 compliant. Runs on MacOS X, Windows/Cygwin/Windows NT/2000/XP, POSIX, BSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, HP-UX, Linux, Solaris, Unix. SER (SIP Express Router) - A fast and flexible SIP (RFC3621) server. Written entirely in C, it can handle thousands of calls per second on low-budget hadware. A C shell-like scripting language provides full control over the server's behavior. SER is primarily intended for use by Developers, System Administrators. Its has many optional modules. GYach Enhanced - A feature-rich, improved version of the original Gyach. It is a Yahoo! client for Linux with voice chat capability. The program supports chat, conferences, buddy lists, and My Yahoo content. The program runs as an X11 Applications, and is written in C and Python. JVOIPLIB (Jori's Voice over IP Library) is an object-oriented Voice over IP (VoIP) library written in C++. It is based upon work done for the author's thesis at the School for Knowledge Technology (or 'School voor Kennistechnologie' in Dutch), a cooperation between the 'Limburgs Universitair Centrum' (LUC) and the 'Universiteit Maastricht' (UM). A part of this library was developed at the 'Expertise Centre for Digital Media' (EDM) in Diepenbeek, Belgium. The EDM is a research institute of the LUC.Runs under Windows and Linux. enigma 3 - A Web-starting Java Jabber client with audio and voice chat support. It runs under JAVA. Further details can, perhaps, be read at http://complat.sourceforge.net/jnlp
RAT (Robust Audio Tool) - An RTP audio conferencing and streaming application that allows users to particpate in point-to-point and multi-point audio conferences over the Internet. Developing features include multiple sampling rates, mono/stereo, loss concealment, and IPv4/IPv6 support, and both versions feature encryption and run on a range of platforms, including Windows and UNIX/Linux variants. Thebridge - An EchoLink-compatible conference bridge that runs under FreeBSD, Linux, QNX, MacOS X, Windows 95/98/ME, and perhaps other POSIX compliant operating systems.
